Book Fair visits library

The Scholastic Book Fair comes to the library September 23-October 2. Don't forget to stop by the library and browse!

Cab Middle School students are scheduled to visit the fair as follows: 6th grade: September 24; 7th grade: September 29; 8th grade: October 1. High school students are invited to drop in anytime. Fair hours are 7:20am-3:00pm daily, and also during Charter's Back To School Open House on September 24, and during Cab's Back To School Open House on September 30.

Cab students excel at BPA

Cab Calloway School of the Arts middle school brought home top honors and recognition for the Red Clay School District and the State of Delaware at the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference held in Dallas Texas June 17-21. Nine State Winners attended conference workshops and competed against over 3,000 students nationwide. They were accompanied by teacher Jenn Peters and parent coach Angie Barker.

The BPA Club at Cab Calloway is dedicated to developing professionalism and leadership through club activities, competitions and state and national leadership conferences. Club advisor is Business teacher Nancy Cleveland and the chapter president is Noah Henry.

Senior Portraits Info

Due to construction, senior portraits scheduled for August 22 at Cab will now be taken at AI DuPont Middle School located at 3130 Kennett Pike.

Scheduled sitting times remain the same. The August 29 sittings will take place at Cab.

Odyssey of the Mind

Come and have fun by joining the Odyssey of the Mind program at CCSA!

Odyssey of the Mind is a program that encourages students to find solutions to open ended problems by utilizing creative problem solving methods.

Each year, five new competitive problems are presented and teams up to 7 students spend months working toward solutions.

During the competition in early March, teams present their solution in the form of a performance to a panel of volunteer judges. Part of the competitions also requires the team to solve a spontaneous problem, in which they are given an issue to resolve on the spot, which is also part of their score.

Teams are lead by parent volunteers and they worked for several months toward their solution. The solution to the problem is usually presented in the form of a performance and may involve any of the following activities: building hand made props, designing and building a backdrop, design and building technical devices, developing and writing that will represent the solution to their problem, making costumes for the performance.

The skills learned by the students while preparing for their competition includes brainstorming ideas, compromise and working with limited resources, thinking out of the box, team building. It teaches things student don't always learn in a classroom setting.

Strings major offered at Cab

Cab Calloway will be offering strings as a major this year in both middle and high school. Ms. Ayers will be team-teaching with two graduate students from the University of Delaware who are certified music educators and strings players. The HS strings class will be comprised of both Cab and Charter students. Any student interested should contact the school to request a schedule change. We will be working collaboratively with the University of Delaware, the Calloway Fund Board, and Red Clay to expand this program in the coming years. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive orchestra program at Cab Calloway School of the Arts!

In addition to offering strings as a major, the following programs will be offered after school for grades 9-12.

After School Programs

• String Quartet program for advanced string students (Grades 9-12)
• Strings class for intermediate level (Grades 9-12)

We may also be able to provide an after school strings class forinterested middle school students based on interest and participation.

Middle school students currently enrolled have 3 options:

1. Take strings as a major and a minor (you would have strings 5 days a week).
2. Take strings as a major with a different minor (you would have strings 3 days a week).
3. Take strings as a minor with a different major (you would have strings 2 days a week). This is where all previous students are currently enrolled.

If you have not already done so, please contact Dr. Hocking and let him know which option you prefer. Expansion of the major in the middle school grades for this school year will be based on interest of students.

National art recognition for Brittany Fay!

Congratulations to Cab 10th grader Brittany Fay! Her drawing (see a detail from her drawing at left) was named a NATIONAL gold medal winner in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2009. Brittany received her gold medal at Carnegie Hall in New York City last Thursday, June 4. For a complete list of Cab's regional winners in the contest, check this out!

Summer Theatre Opportunity

The Little Mermaid, The Grand, Wilmington, DE Open to Ages: Kindergarten to 12th grades The Little Mermaid (with Missoula Children's Theatre) Audition Date: Tuesday, July 28, 2009 10 am. Performance Date: Saturday, August 1, 2009 10 am and Noon The baby grand theater Approximately 50-60 local students will be cast to appear in the show with the MCT Tour Actor/Directors. Students wishing to audition must arrive by the scheduled starting time and stay for the entire two-hour session. The first rehearsal begins approximately 15-30 minutes after the audition.
