Julia Melendez (12th grade): Honorable Mention, Female Hispanic Student of the Year. Julia also performed a jazz dance during the ceremony, to showcase the talents of Hispanic students.

Cab Calloway Spirit Night this Thursday!

Congratulations to Collin Megee, a 6th grade student at Cab. Collin was selected for the Delaware Olympic Development Program for soccer. The Delaware ODP team consists of 20 players selected from soccer clubs and schools statewide. The team represents Delaware in the 1997 age group in Regional soccer competition.

Cab Calloway's Brandon Ross broke the school record in the 200 meter dash this past Saturday at the Keith Burgess Invitational track meet at Lake Forest High School. The former (Charter school) record for the 200 meter dash - 22.0 seconds; the NEW school record - 21.85 seconds.
The school record had not been broken since 1999. Brandon's name will now go on the track and field wall of fame until someone else takes a crack at it.

Congratulations to Cab student, Kristin Cardamone, grade 7 (visual), who placed first with her CYM track relay team in the 4x-100 out of 12 teams and is headed to the Penn Relays on Friday, 4/23/10 at Franklin Field, Philadelphia, with a time of 55.08 seconds.

The University of Delaware History Department has selected Holly Franklin of Cab Calloway School of the Arts to receive their History Teacher of the Year award. This award, given annually to an outstanding Delaware history teacher, recognizes teaching excellence and contributions to the improvement of history instruction in the state.

Red Clay Music Festivals

Red Clay is proud of the students and teachers in the performing arts programs throughout the district. The general music experience begins in kindergarten, and the instrumental training starts in fourth grade. Throughout the years, the music teachers’ goals are to prepare students to be creative and artful performers and life-long appreciators of music.

To support those goals, the district is establishing an annual music festival series for students and the community. By definition, the festival will be a celebration of students’ performances in instrumental and choral music. Students will benefit from the festival series by learning the musical selections and receiving feedback from renowned guest adjudicators. Both the community and students also will benefit as musical listeners.

The first festival of the series was held on April 20th and showcased the high school bands, including Cab Calloway's Wind Ensemble. University of Delaware Professor Heidi Sarver was the guest adjudicator.

For the 2010-2011 school year, there will be a fall festival for middle schools followed by a spring choral festival for high schools. Each Red Clay music festival will be free to the community.

To extend the benefits beyond the students and the audience, voluntary donations will be taken at each festival. All contributions will be given to the Red Clay Education Foundation.

Red Clay invites the community to attend each of these festivals to celebrate our students’ musical talents and accomplishments.

Fashion Weeks at Cab

Cab Calloway Fashion Club is teaming up with our DFRC Committee to hold our first ever Fashion Week!!

High School Fashion Week will be during the week of April 26
Middle School Fashion Week will be during the week of May 3rd

Fashion Week is an opportunity for high school students to have fun being fashionable while also contributing to a charitable cause, DFRC (The Delaware Foundation Reaching Children with Intellectual Disabilities). Prizes will be awarded to the winner each day and an overall male and female “Fashionista” will be crowned at the end of the week (for both middle school and high school)!!

Cab Students win Delaware Duck Stamp Contest

High School Art Teacher Mr. Hanel reports:

Our own Yuchen Li earned 1st Runner Up in the Grade 10-12 Division, and future CCSA student Maria Ji not only earned 1st place in the Grade 7-9 Division, but also received Best in Show meaning that her piece goes to DC to compete nationally for the Federal Youth Duck Stamp competition.

Delaware's New Assessment System (DCAS)

This is the last year for the state test, DSTP. Replacing DSTP will be Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System (DCAS). DCAS will be given on a computer. Students will have more than one opportunity to take the tests throughout the year. One benefit to online testing is that results are received immediately.

To prepare for the new state tests, Cab Calloway students will be taking field tests at selected times from April 26 – June 2. The purpose of field testing is to give the state feedback on test items. Students will not receive scores. Students will be testing in the following subjects:
· Reading- Grades 2-10
· Mathematics- Grades 2-10
· Social Studies- Grades 4 and 7
· Science- Grades 5, 8, and 10

During school, students will complete a tutorial and training test to practice online testing skills, such as using a mouse or keyboard and using online tools. Families can also try the tutorial and training test at http://de.portal.airast.org. To use the training test, a free Mozilla Firefox browser must be installed on the home computer. A link to download Mozilla Firefox is on the website with the training test. Please be aware that the training test is not grade-specific. Questions are grouped by elementary, middle, and high school levels. Therefore, some questions may be easier or more difficult based on the student’s actual grade.

Senior Countdown

The senior final exam days are scheduled for May 25, 26, 27, and 28. These are FULL DAYS for seniors.

The schedule will be as follows:

Tuesday, May 25th Regular Class Day for seniors (and all) – final review day
Wednesday, May 26th Regular Bell Schedule – Seniors will take the first half of their final exams in class on this day.
Thursday, May 27th Regular Bell Schedule – Seniors will take the second half of the final exams in class on this day.
Friday, May 28th Regular Bell Schedule – Seniors would come in for make up exams as needed.
(Noon show that day as well – INTO THE WOODS – for all school.)

Seniors will be finished at that point. They need to return to school on Thursday, June 3rd for graduation rehearsal in our theatre – 9:00 AM. Seniors also need to attend dress rehearsal at The Grand Opera House at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 4th.

Commencement will be held on Friday, June 4th at 7:00 PM at The Grand Opera House.

Cab Athletes at Twilight Relays

The Boys and Girls Track teams competed in the Twilight Relays at Caravel Academy on Friday. The girls placed 3rd and the boys placed 4th. The girls were led by a school record setting performance in the Distance Medley relay. Meredith Steenkamer, Lexi Santer, Kayleigh Skinner and Julie Macedo ran the 4th fastest time in Delaware state history. The team of Amanda Rickert, Kendall Savage, Elise Braun and Kristin Weiher won the 4 by 1600 relay. Caressa Reeves and Taylor Hawk won the shot put relay. Caressa also teamed with Rose Porter to win the Discus Relay.
Boys winners included the 4 by 100 team of Brandon Ross, Jarrett Ross, Jabari West and Varun Sridhar; and the 4 by 800 team of Nolan Weaver, Eric Staats, Chris Rinschler and Logan Brady.

Halle Burns took first place in the statewide Shakespeare Competition on February 28 at the University of Delaware, so she is going to compete at Lincoln Center and her drama teacher Stephanie Smith gets to study Shakespeare at the Globe this summer! Please congratulate them both when you see them.

Sanford Robbins, director of UD's PTTP and REP company, complimented the Calloway School performances all around and Halle, in particular. It was an awesome experience!

National Scholastic Art & Writing Award Finalists from Cab Calloway

This past March, professionals in the Visual and Literary Arts reviewed approximately 10,000 regional Scholastic gold keys, awarding 1400 National Gold and Silver Medals to the most talented students in the nation. These students are invited to an awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall, participate in workshops led by some of the county’s most renowned artists, filmmakers, and writers, and attend an exhibition reception honoring them in New York City’s Carnegie Hall June 9-10.

Founded in 1923, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the nation’s largest, longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in grades 7 through 12. Bend it Like Tyus!

Congratulations to Cab 7th grader Tyus W. who has been selected to train with an Olympic Development Soccer Team. During this training she will receive personal training from some of the top trainers in the region/nation. This is an honor for her to be chosen - there were over 2000 girls in her age group (born in 1996), and only 60 players were selected. Tyus was the only player chosen from Delaware. Way to go Tyus!

A message from Michelle Spencer, who manages the PTSO's Acme receipts program:

All good things must come to an end. I am sad to pass along that Acme has decided to discontinue the Tape Saver Program and "refocus their efforts on other key issues facing our communities, namely hunger, health, and nutrition." This means that all Acme receipts must be collected, counted, and submitted by April 30, 2010. Please send in all ACME receipts to school no later than April 16th.This works with our spring contest, so be sure to submit your receipts (as well as boxtops and labels) in a bag or envelope marked with your students name and grade. Unfortunately, this cuts our product incentives earnings drastically, so if anyone has another suggestion on how to earn free money for our school, please contact Michelle Spencer mspencer.calloway@yahoo.com. We are still collecting Zingo's receipts as well as BOXTOPS, soup labels, and ink cartridges.

Reminder to everyone: DSTP testing begins next Wednesday, March 10. Students in grades 2-10 will take the Math portion on March 10-11 and the Reading portion on March 15-16.

Students in grades 11 and 12 need to report to school by 11:30 a.m. on testing days. If you have a 4th period CSW class, you are strongly encouraged to report to school by 10:20 a.m. and attend your Charter class!!! (CSW plans to dismiss from testing between 10:00 and 10:30
everyday).

If an 11th or 12th grade student doesn't have a way to get to school late on testing days, then they should report to school at the normal time and spend the morning in the theatre with Mr. Gardner.

Cab Students Jazzed at Disney World

Cab Calloway's JazzChords Choir and Jazz Lab Band returned from Disney World this past Monday with some great memories. JazzChords director Marty Lassman reported on the trip:

This was the first plane flight for some students. This was a great, positive, first experience for them. They experienced the joy of checking bags, airline security checks and, for some, the loss of baggage by the airline.

This long weekend needed to have educational experiences but there also needed to be time to experience ‘the happiest place on earth’ and there was a wealth of time for both!

Some students swam in the hotel’s pool when we first arrived on Thursday afternoon; it was in the low 60’s but the pool was heated. Others rushed to the park for two hours until our opening ceremonies where we were introduced to the three vocal judges, three instrumental judges, three instrumental clinicians and four young professional performers. Disney does things right! These were nationally known - some internationally known - clinicians and performers. Then all the judges, clinicians and performers presented a concert and our students were overwhelmingly inspired by their playing and singing. One student said to me, "You tell us when we improvise, to sound like a sax or a trumpet or a trombone. Now I get it!"

Because our hotel was on the Disneyworld campus, we were able to take advantage of extended hours in the Magic Kingdom that night with fewer crowds and shorter lines!

Friday began with the JazzChords performing for the judges while the Jazz Lab had some free time in the park. We also stayed to listen to a jazz choir from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Following that, the JazzChords had time in the park while the Jazz Lab performed. Both groups had a few free hours ion the park and some singers took advantage of the fabulous American Idol Experience where they went through the same process that the participants on American Idol do. Several of our students got as far as the semi-final round!

Friday night, we attended a private reception where we ate wings and egg rolls and listened to and danced to one of the Disney professional ensembles playing standard jazz tunes. Following that, we were led to a private area to see the spectacular Images of Earth firework spectacular at Epcot. Epcot was open to us late that night so again we had shorter wait lines at rides.
Saturday was intense with workshops. First the vocalists, brass, rhythm and woodwinds had their own clinics. Next, our students attended a ‘conversation’ with the young professional artists where they could see what path their lives took and our students could ask questions of them. Finally, there was a jam session with the professionals, clinicians and our students. Asher Denberg (9) and Gregory Dexter (8) were chosen as the pianist and drummer for the entire session! Several of our students were able to ‘jam’ (improvise) with such greats as Dr. Willie Hill, Chris Vadala and these up and coming professionals. At the end of the session, Butch Miles gave Greg a private drum lesson on brush technique. Wow!

After an afternoon in the park, we gathered one last time for the evening awards ceremony. The awards look like ‘platinum’ records ... but with Mickey Mouse ears! Dr. Cannon and I were congratulated by Mickey himself, Asher won an award as the outstanding accompanist and Darrell Patterson won an award as the outstanding vocal soloist.

This was an amazing and incomparable educational experience for me and our students. Based upon the student and parent chaperone reaction to the educational and fun aspects of this trip, we are certainly going to repeat the experience as soon as possible!

Cab student performs in Willy Wonka Junior

Come to Saint Edmond's Academy on March 26, 27, or 28 for the school production of "Willy Wonka, Junior" and prepare to be impressed and entertained. This uplifting stage production is sure to warm the hearts of children of all ages and is great family entertainment. The 51 cast members, featuring boys and girls from Delaware and Southeastern Pennsylvania, and including Cab sixth grader Maren Billy, are in process of learning songs, dances, lines, and blocking to create another memorable production. Saint Edmond's Academy has a long history and reputation for excellence in musical theatre. This production continues the tradition with professional set/lighting design, stage
management, accompanist, choreographer and music and stage directors.
The principal cast is made up of experienced performers including a number
of All-State singers. Tickets (Adult $10; Student/Senior $7.50) are

If you don't know our own Pearce Quesenberry, a 7th grader, you've got to meet her. She is extraordinary! She and her family have faced such challenges in the last 730 days, and they are now dedicated to helping other families who face the challenges of beating cancer!

Girls on the Run coming to Cab

What is Girls on the Run?

Girls on the Run is a life-changing learning program for girls in grades 3-8. The program combines training for a 5K (3.1 mile) running event with healthy living education. The program instills self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships and physical training – all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff and community.

This spring we will introduce the program to Cab students for the first time. We will open up registration to 6th grade girls. The program will have two coaches with a team maximum of 14 students.

If we get a strong interest for next spring we will open up the program to 6th and 7th grade girls and have two teams.

Cab students attend BPA competition

Good luck to Mrs. Cleveland's Business Professionals of America (BPA) Club as they prepare to head to Dover for their state competition this Wednesday, February 24. This year, twenty-three middle school students have entered various events including Excel, keyboarding, speeches, Career Research, Web Team, Extemporaneous Speaking, Graphic Design.

All students will compete in the following open events: Business Fundamentals, Business Communication, Business Math, Computer Literacy.

Winners at the state level advance to national competition, held May 5-9, in Anaheim, California.

Footloose! The Musical

Footloose: The Musical Directed by Marjorie Eldreth! Like the 1984 Kevin Bacon film that inspired it, Footloose follows the story of Ren, who moves with his mother to a small town where dancing is prohibited by law. Teens will be teens, of course, so Ren ends up at odds with the town and especially the local minister, Reverend Moore. Along the way, the characters sing familiar songs from the movie ("The Girl Gets Around," "Holding Out for a Hero," "Let's Hear It for the Boy," "Almost Paradise," and of course the title tune), and new songs as well.

Cab Calloway at "Sunday with Shakespeare"

If you'd like to see CCSA senior Pierre Theron perform a chilling monologue from Titus Andronicus or catch a scene slice from Hamlet, directed by Shannon Clark, or The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Lindsay Reed and Alysia VanLooy, stop by UD on Sunday, February 28th and join us for a little Shakespeare.

"Sunday with Shakespeare" will be held from 1 to 5 PM at the Thompson Theatre in the new Roselle Center for the Arts on Amstel Avenue at the University of Delaware. The event is free and open to the public.

A Teachers Workshop will be held at 11:30 am: Dr. Halio and PTTP's Leslie Reidel will provide you with an hour of Professional Development at 11:30 AM. All you need to do is show up at the Thompson Theatre. If you can, stay for the Sunday with Shakespeare program starting at 1 pm." There will be refreshments at intermission.

The event will combine the statewide Shakespeare Competition, featuring individual students performing monologues and reciting sonnets, with the former New Castle County Shakespeare Festival, featuring troupes of actors performing scenes. Both will be viewed by an audience of their peers and from UD's REP (Resident Ensemble Players) Company who will serve as judges for the Competition and commentators for the Festival. The performances will be interspersed with entertainments by the day's Master of Revels, Christopher Davis, the Renaissance Man.
Sponsoring organizations include: Delaware Humanities Forum, Delaware Branch of the English-Speaking Union, the theatre program at the University of Delaware, Padua Academy and the Cab Calloway School of the Arts, and the Cab Calloway School Fund.

A 20-member medical team from Delaware spent a week treating earthquake victims in n the coastal town of Jacmel, Haiti, where the town's only hospital lay in ruins. We are sending out our second medical team this Wednesday. More medications and medical supplies are needed. If you can get them to me or to the location listed below by Tuesday evening that would be great. If that is too soon, don't worry, we will be sending teams continuously, for as long as we can.

The Red Clay Consolidated School District will host the 1st annual Red Clay College Fair on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Conrad Schools of Science from 6:15PM to 8:15PM in the school gymnasium.

This free event is designed for secondary students and their parents to learn about planning for higher education and/or training after graduation. Red Clay counselors will facilitate informational sessions on selecting a school, the application process, and financial aid. Representatives from regional colleges, universities, and technical schools will be available to provide information about their programs and distribute brochures and other materials.

Cab hosts Delaware Speech League Tournament

The first annual Delaware Speech League Tournament was held at Cab Calloway School of the Arts on Saturday, January 9, 2010 in the school library from 9 am to 1:30 pm. Students from five area schools competed in categories including: dramatic poetry script presentation, extemporaneous speech, social studies trivia, literature trivia, memorized poetry presentations, memorized prose/monologue and science trivia, math trivia--no calculator (Algebra I through Calculus), and dramatic monogoue with script.

Cab Calloway School of the Arts and Sanford School tied for 1st, Salesianum placed 2nd, and Tall Oaks and Pencader Charter both received Honorable Mentions in the Delaware State Speech League 1st Tournament of 2010. The next tournament will be held at Conrad.

The Award for Most Personable Student at the Event went to Pencader student, Nelson Roland. Most Valuable Volunteer Award went to Cab Calloway’s Shannon Clark.

Chris Millison, YoungARTS Finalist!

Congratulations to senior Chris Millison who learned recently that he is a YoungArts finalist.

As a finalist, Millison has won an all-expense-paid trip to Miami, Florida, next week (January 11-16) for YoungArts Week and individual cash awards ranging from $1000 to $10,000. Panelists select up to 150 students each year as YoungArts Finalists and bring them to Miami for YoungArts Week for master classes, showcase performances, exhibitions, enrichment programs, and final adjudications.

The YoungArts Finalists are the only students eligible to receive the White House designation of Presidential Scholars in the Arts. At the conclusion of YoungArts Week panelists nominate 60 YoungArts Finalists and 20 are ultimately selected as Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

YoungArts is National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts’s core program. It provides recognition and awards to young artists across the country. It is the only organization that encourages and recognizes artistic excellence in the literary, visual and performing arts, including dance, cinematic arts, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, and writing.

Each year, approximately 6,000-8,000 students register for the YoungArts program and approximately 10 percent receive cash awards.

Set in Middletown, it follows the story of the Hill's during a difficult holiday season. Jim Hill, the father of the family, has lost his job due to the down turn of the economy. He has moved across country to take a job.

Judy Hill, the mother, learns disheartening news that she has been diagnosed with cancer. The Hill's children have difficulties adjusting to their new way of life. And finally, Judy's mother Charlotte has to deal with the pain of watching her family struggle through these difficult times. Along the way they meet a volunteer that helps the family find joy through the holidays. The show provides moments of hilarity with many supporting characters.

Thankfully, their town provides many positive opportunities to the family. The family learned the greatest gifts come from people with compassion. While this holiday season may not bring the most expensive gifts - The greatest gift is a community wrapped in love.

"Tis the season! Cab choirs, bands and performance groups are busy this month performing. For example, check out the news from Mr. Lassman's JazzChords and middle school choirs:

The JazzChords sang at the Arden Gild Hall on Saturday for the University A Cappella Festival. Also on the program were The Deaftones from the Westminster Choir College, Off the Beat from the University of Pennsylvania and The Tigertones from Princeton University. The Jazzchords held their own and one attendee said that we were her favorite. Nice!

Monday night, the 6th grade Vocal Music Majors will sing at The Lorelton, 2200 W. 4th Street, Wilmington at 7pm.

Wednesday night is Grotto Pizza Night. Eat at Grotto Pizza on Delaware Avenue, present our coupon, and 20% of your bill comes back to CCSA to help finance the Jazz Lab Band and JazzChords’ trip to DisneyWorld to compete in a national jazz competition.

Cab student is YoungArts finalist

Cab senior Chris Millison recently learned he was a finalist in the 2010 YoungARTS program, sponsored by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. His position has earned him an all-expenses paid trip to Miami, Florida in January for a week of master classes, showcase performances, exhibitions, enrichment programs, and final adjudications. Only 150 finalists were selected from an initial applicant pool of nearly 6,000, so Chris' achievement is pretty impressive!

The youngARTS Finalists are the only students eligible to receive the White House designation of Presidential Scholars in the Arts. At the conclusion of youngARTS Week panelists nominate 60 youngARTS Finalists and 20 are ultimately selected as Presidential Scholars in the Arts. Finalists also qualify for cash awards ranging from $1,000-10,000.

Due to complaints from community members and surrounding businesses as well as parents at both Cab and Charter, patrolmen from the DE State Troopers will begin enforcing traffic laws and issuing citations as warranted beginning Monday, Nov. 16. Per instructions from Captain Pulling of the DE State Troopers, I am sending this email to make you aware that all traffic laws will be enforced. As we have done in the past, we encourage you to pull through the parking lot and drop off at the score board. This may require an adjustment to the time you leave your home, however, it is ultimately safer for you and your children and that is the primary concern. If you would like to help brain storm and create and terrific After-Prom Party for your son or daughter please contact Pamela Droke at droke@comcast.net. Picture Retake Day next Thursday

Picture retake day will be on November 12th from 8:00 - Noon. If your student wishes to have retakes he/she will need to sign up in the guidance office by 2:30 PM on Tuesday, November 10th. The first picture package must be returned to the photographer in order to have retakes taken.

Students wishing to order pictures for the first time will need to have the order form and money with them when they are photographed. Order forms are available in the guidance office and on-line at www.hjconsumerdirect.com/order/931430. Credit Card orders may be done on-line also and be placed 7 days prior to the picture day and 24 hours after.

ALL students who have not had their picture taken yet will need to have it taken for the yearbook and student ID's. I do have a list of those students and they will receive a pass to go to the auditorium.

Jazz Assembly this Thursday

On this Thursday (10/29), our school will have a special guest for an afternoon assembly. Following opening performances by the high school's award-winning JazzChords (Lassman) and the middle school's JazzLab (Cannon), Denis DiBlasio will be performing along with his student led JazzLab from Rowan University. For those who don't know who he is, here's a brief biography about Denis.

After receiving his masters degree from the University of Miami, Denis DiBlasio joined the big band of legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, serving as Maynard's Musical Director for five years. During this time he honed his virtuosity on the baritone saxophone and flute as well as a prodigious scat-vocal technique, and developed formidable composing/arranging skills. His scores have been published by Kendor, William Allen, Kjos, Doug Beach and Hal Leonard, and his several books on jazz improvisation and scat-singing are available through Kendor, Houston and Jamey Aebersold Publications. He is currently Director of the Jazz Department and conducts the Jazz Lab Band at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.

As a clinician for the Yamaha Musical Corporation, DiBlasio has taught and performed all over the United States; his "education as entertainment" style has also taken him to Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, Switzerland, Denmark and Japan. His unique combination of positive motivation and witty sense of humor ensures an atmosphere where "making music is fun" and students are encouraged by his fearless risk-taking attitude that communicates the message: "Mistakes are valid - if you learn something from the attempt." This approach keeps Denis extremely busy, in constant demand and often booked up to a year in advance.

The sheer joy of spontaneity, intensity, and depth of expression all come together in the jazz artistry of Denis Diblasio.

The Red Clay Consolidated School District Consolidated Grant Parent Advisory Council (CGPAC) will host the 3rd annual Red Clay Family Resource Fair on Saturday, November 21st at Conrad Schools of Science from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

This free, fun-filled family event is designed for students, their families and the community to enjoy time together and to gather strategies and information that helps students succeed in school. Over65 exhibits will be provided by Red Clay staff, and representatives from local community agencies. The goal of the event is to educate students, parents and the community about the resources available through the district and in the community that support student achievement.

The Family Resource Fair will be held in the gymnasium and will include exhibits, displays, demonstrations, and resources. For those of you who did not attend our first PTSO meeting, I wanted to let you know that the budget was approved for this year. With everyone's support, we hope to have a wonderful year. Are you wondering what the PTSO does for your school? With the approved budget, the PTSO will provide funding and support to our parents, teachers and, most importantly, our students for the following:

Vocal Concert features Middle School Performances

The Middle School Vocal Music students will present their first concert of the year on Thursday night (Oct. 22) at 7:00pm in the Cab Calloway Theater. The concert will last an hour (or less) and will feature performances by several classes singing Renaissance pieces. In addition, our 8th grade Vocal Majors and Minors will be wearing Renaissance garb.

It is one of the very few times - maybe the only one - this school year that all the Middle School Vocal Music classes will perform in one concert. You are, of course, welcome to join us. October 22 is the night of parent conferences for the middle school, so plan to stay for the concert!

This is an extremely worthwhile event and I encourage students in grades9 - 11 to attend!! Attending college fairs is a great way to gather information and talk to representatives from a variety of schools.

Tips on attending a college fair (taken from NewsDay.com):

With so much information about colleges and universities available through a quick Internet search, today's tech savvy kids sometimes wonder whether there's any good reason to go to a college fair.

Yes, there are plenty. Here's what you can tell them:

If you're just beginning your college search, attending a fair is the most efficient way to scout out a wide variety of schools in a short amount of time. And if you've already narrowed down your list, you'll have the opportunity to really hone in on your top choices. "Unlike what you'll find on websites and in brochures, you can be sure that you'll be getting the most up-to-date and accurate information, coming from someone authorized to speak for the school," says Andrew Sison, chair of the college fair committee of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling.

But with so many institutions represented at the typical fair-literally hundreds of schools are participating in the October 4 fair at the Nassau Coliseum <http://www.newsday.com/topics/Nassau_Coliseum> -it can be easy to wander the aisles in a fog and come away with a pile of brochures and a debilitating case of information overload. These tips will help you make the most of the day:

Halloween Magic Dance!

Middle school students, don't miss the first dance of this year. It's Halloween Magic time, and it's in the Cab gym on Friday, October 23, from 7:00-9:30pm. Halloween costumes are optional, but there will be category judging, so check through your closets and drawers and create a winning look!

Admission is $5 (payable by October 21!) and a non-perishable food item for the food bank. The dance is sponsored by the middle school BPA (Business Professionals of America), and offers a great opportunity to spend time wtih friends and meet new friends.

Non-Cab students may attend, but the Cab student inviting the guest must complete and turn in a guest registration form by October 21. Guest tickets also cost $5.

We will be going on Thursday December 3 to see the fabulous show, 'Billy Elliott.' The music is by Elton John and the show won 10 (TEN!) TONY Awards. The cost is $150 per person. We will leave CCSA as early as we can after 8:30am. Each family will have the day to spend in Times Square as they wish but we will make suggestions for things to do and see. At 7:30pm, we will gather to see the show which starts at 8:00pm. After the show (10:45pm) we will again get on our coach buses and return to CCSA at about 1:15am. Students who go will be excused from school (it is a field trip) on that Thursday.

This is a trip that is annually attended by a LOT of students and parents. Last year we took 465 people on the trip and received many emails saying what a great day it was!

Cab Middle School students are scheduled to visit the fair as follows: 6th grade: September 24; 7th grade: September 29; 8th grade: October 1. High school students are invited to drop in anytime. Fair hours are 7:20am-3:00pm daily, and also during Charter's Back To School Open House on September 24, and during Cab's Back To School Open House on September 30.

Cab students excel at BPA

Cab Calloway School of the Arts middle school brought home top honors and recognition for the Red Clay School District and the State of Delaware at the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference held in Dallas Texas June 17-21. Nine State Winners attended conference workshops and competed against over 3,000 students nationwide. They were accompanied by teacher Jenn Peters and parent coach Angie Barker.

The BPA Club at Cab Calloway is dedicated to developing professionalism and leadership through club activities, competitions and state and national leadership conferences. Club advisor is Business teacher Nancy Cleveland and the chapter president is Noah Henry.

Odyssey of the Mind

Come and have fun by joining the Odyssey of the Mind program at CCSA!

Odyssey of the Mind is a program that encourages students to find solutions to open ended problems by utilizing creative problem solving methods.

Each year, five new competitive problems are presented and teams up to 7 students spend months working toward solutions.

During the competition in early March, teams present their solution in the form of a performance to a panel of volunteer judges. Part of the competitions also requires the team to solve a spontaneous problem, in which they are given an issue to resolve on the spot, which is also part of their score.

Teams are lead by parent volunteers and they worked for several months toward their solution. The solution to the problem is usually presented in the form of a performance and may involve any of the following activities: building hand made props, designing and building a backdrop, design and building technical devices, developing and writing that will represent the solution to their problem, making costumes for the performance.

The skills learned by the students while preparing for their competition includes brainstorming ideas, compromise and working with limited resources, thinking out of the box, team building. It teaches things student don't always learn in a classroom setting.

Strings major offered at Cab

Cab Calloway will be offering strings as a major this year in both middle and high school. Ms. Ayers will be team-teaching with two graduate students from the University of Delaware who are certified music educators and strings players. The HS strings class will be comprised of both Cab and Charter students. Any student interested should contact the school to request a schedule change. We will be working collaboratively with the University of Delaware, the Calloway Fund Board, and Red Clay to expand this program in the coming years. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive orchestra program at Cab Calloway School of the Arts!

In addition to offering strings as a major, the following programs will be offered after school for grades 9-12.

After School Programs

String Quartet program for advanced string students (Grades 9-12)
Strings class for intermediate level (Grades 9-12)

We may also be able to provide an after school strings class forinterested middle school students based on interest and participation.

Middle school students currently enrolled have 3 options:

Take strings as a major and a minor (you would have strings 5 days a week).
Take strings as a major with a different minor (you would have strings 3 days a week).
Take strings as a minor with a different major (you would have strings 2 days a week). This is where all previous students are currently enrolled.

If you have not already done so, please contact Dr. Hocking and let him know which option you prefer. Expansion of the major in the middle school grades for this school year will be based on interest of students.

National art recognition for Brittany Fay!

Congratulations to Cab 10th grader Brittany Fay! Her drawing (see a detail from her drawing at left) was named a NATIONAL gold medal winner in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2009. Summer Theatre Opportunity

The Little Mermaid, The Grand, Wilmington, DE Open to Ages: Kindergarten to 12th grades The Little Mermaid (with Missoula Children's Theatre) Audition Date: Tuesday, July 28, 2009 10 am. Performance Date: Saturday, August 1, 2009 10 am and Noon The baby grand theater Approximately 50-60 local students will be cast to appear in the show with the MCT Tour Actor/Directors. Students wishing to audition must arrive by the scheduled starting time and stay for the entire two-hour session. The first rehearsal begins approximately 15-30 minutes after the audition. Jazz Under the Stars--Vocal Edition

The last 'school' concert this year will be presented on Monday, June 1 in the lobby. It is called Jazz Under the Stars; Vocal Edition (although we will not be outside).

Our featured guest group is the Jazz Lab Band at 7:00. The JazzChords of Calloway take the stage at 7:30. This will be a night of fabulous performances of jazz music. We expect many alumni to come and hear their 'old' choir.

Admission is free but we will gladly accept donations and there will be giveaway chances for donators. We will also have light refreshments for sale. We also will have a slideshow of previous JazzChords events.

Featured singers that night will be Stephen Piergrossi, Liz Richards, Dennis Conner, Alex Groff, Lily Ozer, Mike Hinkle and Tariq Jackson - with a special guest appearance by Dr. Carlton Cannon - although there will be many other singers with written and improvised solos. Please come and enjoy a fabulous evening.
